VSA Florida exhibition to be held at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Duval County

Students create artwork during a VSAFL artist residency program

VSA Florida received community funding from the Gannett Foundation for Hand ‘n Hand, an Artist Residency program.  This residency provided an opportunity for a unique visual art experience.  The Hand ‘n Hand residency included a teaching artist  working with students in an ESE or inclusive classrooms for a total of 9 hours (one hour a week for 9 weeks).  The teaching artist provided a sequential arts experience that built art skills, allowed for creative expression and connected with classroom learning. The residency concludes with 2 one hour sessions (weeks 8 & 9) with an adult artist with disabilities creating a collaborative piece of art. The opportunity enabled students to explore the creative process in a group project.  In addition, it showcased the teaching artist’s inclusion strategies for the classroom teacher and the artist with disabilities was a role model for the students.

$500 - That’s how much it costs to bring an artist into a classroom to electrify the creativity of all students, including those with a disability.
$500 provides an avenue to change teacher attitudes about the abilities of students with disabilities.
$500 offers an opportunity for students with disabilities to change their perception of their own abilities and for their classmates to turn up side down their perception of disability.
