Arts In Healthcare
The Arts in Medicine program incorporates artistic expression in the healing of critically and chronically ill children with cancer, sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. Professional artists work with the children and their families. Patients' artwork is exhibited at the clinic and in the community at large.
The Children's Cancer Fund is located at the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Clinic at the University of Miami/Jackson Children's Hospital. The clinic treats children with life-threatening illnesses, cancer and blood disorders. The Arts in Medicine program commissions local professional artists who expose children to different media and styles of expression. Their expert guidance offers the therapeutic benefits of an art experience without misconceptions associated with "therapy". The artists target thematic ideas, with great latitude for a child's personal choice. Whoever wants to participate in a collective project may join in: patient, siblings, parents and caregivers. During the "Healing Fantasy Gardens" project, ceramic clay was used to create individual ceramic wall tiles, which were then mounted on painted wooded shapes in a garden theme. In another project, ceiling tiles from a treatment room were painted and replaced, creating a mosaic mural of garden plants and animals. Children also make collages, finger paintings and oil pastels based on their emotions. Individual paintings and drawings are framed and displayed throughout the clinic.
Partners include: Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council, Rex Art Supply, and the Cultural Development Group.

Arts In Healthcare
The University of Miami, School of Nursing is in the planning stages of creating an Arts in Healthcare program. The new Healthy Visions program provides Arts in Healthcare services for seriously disturbed adolescent girls in treatment at an in-patient facility. The project is a collaborative effort between the University of Miami, the New World School of the Arts, and AGAPE staff. Activities include an art workshop where patients will 1) explore "the rhythms of self- expression" through watercolors, 2) create a self-portrait of themselves in a future profession in a "Healthy Future Images" activity, and 3) participate in an exhibition/culminating event where their art will be displayed. Teenage girls studying at the New World School of the Arts will share professional goals and perform musical selections which demonstrate the "rhythms of self-expression" depicted in art exhibited by patients.
