VSA arts of Florida-Brevard Program Initiatives
Artist in residency programs: VSAF-B typically hosts two visiting artists each year to work with all of our nearly 100 VSA arts exceptional education classes. Barbara Leto taught collage and Pam Mankowski taught drama to 1,000 children with disabilities.
Festival Expedition: the 16th annual hands-on arts festival, gave 1,000 children with disabilities the opportunity to experience the arts while learning about animals and habitats at Brevard Zoo. Hundreds of volunteers, including community organizations and high school peers participate, alongside professional artists, to bring high quality arts experiences to the children. Each participating class prepares, in advance, a 2-D and a 3-D art project for display.
Professional Development: Inservice is offered annually to teachers registered for the VSA arts program. Also, training on disability awareness is provided for volunteers. With the help of program partners, teams of teachers attend the VSA arts of Florida state leadership conference.
Start with the Arts: For young children, Start with the Arts activities were conducted as part of a children's festival held at Patrick Air Force Base. Plans are being made to hold regular Start with the Arts Family Fun Nights in local pre-school classrooms.
Express Diversity!: This national program was used as the basis for a pilot school-based disability awareness festival held during disability awareness month. The entire school participated in the two-day festival that enlisted middle school students as volunteers. Arts for All activities were also incorporated.
Touring Art Exhibits: A selection of student created artwork is matted, framed and exhibited in venues throughout the county. Artwork is also available for purchase through our online gallery at www.vsabrevard.org
Graham, Moletteire & Torpy P.A. Holiday Card Contest: Elementary age exceptional education students are invited to submit artwork for the sponsoring law firm's holiday card. All participants receive recognition and compete for savings bonds and Target Stores gift certificates. The winning artwork is published on the firm's card. Additional cards are available for purchase through VSA arts of Florida-Brevard.
Arts for All: Adaptive arts equipment is available through a lending program housed at VSA arts of Florida-Brevard. Periodic training is provided and a training video accompanies the equipment. Forms are available online at www.vsabrevard.org
Outreach partnership with the King Center for the Performing Arts: VSA arts and the King Center worked together to bring performing arts opportunities to people with disabilities. The Caribbean Sound Ensemble engaged adults with developmental disabilities in a hands-on music workshop. Elementary schools hosted school assemblies while a core group of students worked in a one-week after-school residency to produce the "Sing and Sign Holiday Musical with Gaia."
Mosaic Mural Inclusion Project: During the summer of 2004, adult clients of Brevard Achievement Center worked with high school volunteers to create a mosaic mural for a public park in Melbourne. Artist Lou Ann Weeks led the project that provided art experience, disability awareness, and community service hours for the participants, as well as a beautiful piece of public art. Based on this project's success, plans are in the works to create a high school credit, peer support class centered around other public art projects.
"A Community Presence" Exhibition: Debuting in the fall of 2004 and presented by VSA arts of Florida, the exhibit will showcase the works of adult artists with disabilities at Brevard Museum of Art & Science. Artists are listed on the VSA arts of Florida artist registry
