Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in the Arts
NGSSS-Arts

The proposed revisions to Florida's Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Art standards are now available for public comment through August 22, 2010 at the following four websites:

Dance Standards Review
Music Standards Review
Theatre Standards Review
Visual Arts Standards Review

In the interest of ensuring that the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in the Arts (NGSSS-Arts) are clear, concise, and accurate, the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction invites you to rate each of the Enduring Understandings and Benchmarks, and provide valuable feedback to the Writers. If you would like to explore the source materials from which these standards were derived, please review the Resource Page for Florida Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts used by the Framers and Writers of the proposed standards. Thank you for taking the time to help promote world-class instruction for all of Florida’s students.

Please make time to share this with others, and to review and comment on this first draft of the NGSSS-Arts. Please note: All comments are public record and subject to disclosure.

Background Information:

Big Ideas – their purpose is to focus Arts Education (the “10,000-ft. view”); not intended to be measurable
Enduring Understandings – their purpose is to synthesize the ultimate, desired student outcomes or understandings as a result of meeting the benchmarks (the “5,000-ft. view”); not intended to be measurable, but should provide guidance for designing “Essential Questions” when planning instruction

Benchmarks – their purpose is twofold: to guide instruction and assessment, and help students discover the EUs and Big Ideas over time (the “ground-level view” of the arts education classroom, studio, theatre, auditorium, rehearsal hall, and beyond); must be measurable
