A PASS Can Help Pay For School

Maybe you need to go back to school before you can get a job but do not have the money.

A PASS can help. A Plan for Achieving Self-Support, or PASS for short, is a written plan approved by the Social Security Administration and designed to help you achieve a specific work goal. This plan allows you to set aside money or other things to help you with obtaining stable employment if you have a disability. If you are currently on SSI, a PASS can allow you to keep more of your SSI payment. If your income is too high, setting up a PASS may help you qualify for SSI benefits.

A PASS can help pay for just about any expenses that will assist you with reaching a work goal. Some of these include the following:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies needed for school or training
  • Supported employment services and job coaching
  • Attendant care or child care expenses
  • Assistive technology for school or work
  • Transportation to and from school or work
  • Uniforms, special clothing, and safety equipment
