2009-2010 Funders
The Florida Department of Education provides funding that promotes learning through the arts for students with disabilities from pre-kindergarten through age 21. Funding is utilized for technical assistance, professional development, and coaching for program partners. The National office of VSA provides funding, under an award from the United States Department of Education to support the programming needs of VSA. VSA Florida is a member of the international network of VSA, an affiliate of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VSA is creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.
The Florida Department of Cultural Affairs provides funding to VSA Florida to help support our artist residency and cultural access programming. This year VSA Florida was fortunate to receive through DCA, a grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to provide salary support. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education. The NEA awarded a grant to VSA Florida to help fund our artist residency program. This year the goal is to have an artist residency program in an inclusive classroom in each of Florida’s 67 school districts. The Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of caring reaches out to local communities through professional expertise, financial support and volunteer efforts. The foundation’s goal is to improve the quality of life for all through mentorship, scholarships, sponsorships, awards and service. The Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Caring in Zephyrhills, FL provided funding for Hand ‘n Hand artist residency programs in 4 inclusive classrooms in Pasco County as well as a professional development workshop for Pasco County educators. As Florida’s largest community foundation, Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities that they serve. The Foundation was created in late 1995 and has awarded $92 million in grants in the areas of arts and culture, health and human services, education, civic affairs, and the environment. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice provided funding for Hand ‘n Hand artist residency programs in 3 inclusive classrooms in Charlotte County The mission of the Community Foundation of Hernando County is “building a better community through creative philanthropy, vision and leadership.” The Community Foundation of Hernando County funded Hand ‘n Hand artist residency programs in 3 inclusive classrooms in Hernando County. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts creates and presents active learning opportunities in music, dance and theater for people of all ages, including workshops, classes, lectures, Q&As, interviews and demonstrations related to the performances and presentations featured in the Center’s halls. VSA Florida has partnered with the Adrienne Arsht Center of Miami for the last 3 years to provide artist residency programs in Miami Dade County. The residencies culminate with a final performance at the Arsht Center. 2009-2010 will be the second year that VSA Florida has been asked to assist the NFL Players Association with an annual event entitled “Smocks and Jocks” which is held each year during the Super Bowl. The event includes an art auction of work created by current and retired NFL players, as well as work from 5 artists from the VSAFL artist registry. This year “Smocks and Jocks” will be held at the Casa de Paolo mansion in Miami on February 6, 2010.
